LAKE CHARLES, LA (1203 PM CDT Thu Apr 18 2019) — The National Weather Service in Lake Charles has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for North central Lafayette Parish in south central Louisiana Northeastern Acadia Parish in southwestern Louisiana Southeastern Avoyelles Parish in central Louisiana St. Landry Parish in central Louisiana until 1245 PM CDT. At 1203 PM CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located over Church Point, moving northeast at 55 mph. HAZARD: 60 mph wind gusts. SOURCE: Radar indicated. Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees. Locations impacted include Lafayette, Opelousas, Church Point, Simmesport, Krotz Springs, Leonville, Arnaudville, Melville, Palmetto, Bayou Current, Sunset, Port Barre, Washington, Grand Coteau, Cankton, Prairie Ronde, Lawtell, Swords and Lebeau. A Tornado Watch remains in effect until 700 PM CDT for central, south central and southwestern Louisiana. For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. Damaging winds and continuous cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Move indoors immediately. Lightning is one of nature s leading killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Torrential rainfall is occurring with this storm, and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.
